Numbering Our Days

As Moses took God as his dwelling place, he realized that the span of his life on earth is short (see Psa. 90:3-11). We may live on earth for 70 or 80 years, and to God even 1000 years are “like yesterday when it passes by, and like a watch in the night” (see v. 4). Our life on earth is short and “full of sins and afflictions” – if we have such a realization, we will take God as our dwelling place! The Rich Fool

During the week in which Facebook finally filed its paperwork for the most anticipated initial public offering since Google, and the news media was buzzing over the number of millionaires that the Facebook IPO would create, my small group Bible study just happened to be discussing the parable of the rich fool in Luke 12:13-34. This parable, presented amidst an inheritance dispute which the Lord wanted no part of, tells the story of a farmer whose bumper crop brings him great wealth overnight and causes him to decide to indulge his soul in retirement. But his retirement lasts less than one day; he expires and his accumulated wealth cannot compensate for his personal deficit toward God. ...read more

Silence

I’ve been struggling and growing in the spiritual disciplines of solitude and silence. And people who know me are probably laughing to themselves right now, because you see, I’m a doer and a talker! Though I struggle with these disciplines, I do see the value in their practice. Last month, I talked about preparing your calendar for times of study. But I’m so busy, my calendar is full of “doing”, even my devotional time is “doing” – reading, praying, studying… that I often leave no time in my calendar and devotion to just be, in silence, and listen to God. ...read more
